avant garde project unit 1 and 3

week 1
on the first week on the first day we learnt two routines and then put them together. Avant Garde
company dance in the style of street after performing to the company the dance all together we then done an exercise in groups of 3 where we had to move across the space but keep contact with each other , after that we then got into larger groups and had to improvise within the group in a huddle and lastly we created a little improvisation circle in smaller groups where you jump in dance then someone else jumps in. on the second day we started learning the routine that we will perform at the Bloomsbury festival.
at the beginning of the dance we start in a huddle which is hiding the person crouched down in the middle we all hold a different shape around them and then when we hear the correct beat in the music we open up almost like when a flower blooms and we all crouch down to the floor but still maintaining slow and majestic movements whilst the person in the middle of the bunch is revealed and rises out of the "flower". We used counts in the music to help us maintain unison throughout and to keep our movements clean and strong, and we varied the speed of our movements depending on the tempo of the music.
the thing I found most difficult about the dance is probably knowing what parts in the dance are fast, sharp and solid  and what parts are more slow and soft I think this is because the music changes and its sounds so quick but I think after keep practicing I will be more confident with the choreography.
on the first day I  became more confident  with improvising and changing the style of dance to fit the with style of music.
overall I really enjoyed the first two days with Avant Garde I got to see different styles of dance and a really strong piece of dance people that are similar ages to me and it made me realize how hard I have to work and the amount of fitness I need to reach that level of dance.

week 2
this week I was only there for the Thursday class where we carried on cleaning the dance and learning more of it. We carried on using counts to help us keep in time with each other and the music we also using the flower imagery again but in a slightly bigger circle but this time we covered the flower with our hands and then in cannon we opened the flower in a slow and majestic movement .
this week I found the counts the most challenging to try and hear the beats in the music but after keep going over it I managed to get the hang of it.
this week I learnt a different way in which to use cannon and further excelled my knowledge on counting music try and help me hear the beat we also used imagery in a more street style. overall I enjoyed the 2nd weeks rehearsal as I am  really having fun dancing street and the music.

week 3
this week I was only there for Thursday where we added the last finishing bits of choreography and then we managed to finish the dance completely. The choreographer added a variation of techniques to make the dance effective such as, running especially at the end of the dance this created suspense, also a bit of ballet/contemporary technique was added which I think works effectively as it shoes a different style of dance can be performed to all different types of music not just the stereotypical type you would expect. This week the thing I found most challenging would probably be the counts because if u don't hit certain moves on the exact count then it would look as effective in order to help myself with this iv had o keep going over the counts in my head a keep rehearsing what move is on what count so then it becomes natural to me. I've learnt that you have to work through tiredness and pain to get the best result possible and the only way you'll get better is when you feel tired to push through it because it will build your stamina and strength. Working with Avant Garde company it has shown me how tough and tiring things can be but working together and helping each other will always give you a positive and successful result it also taught me how professional you have to be in order to become successful. Overall I feel the piece is really strong and will look even better once were at the place where were going to perform, to prepare for the performance we just need to keep practising in our own time. the workshop has inspired me to and shown me how much I actually love performing and despite sometimes how tired you may be of the long rehearsals its actually all worth it because the feeling once you maybe finally get a move right or are able to remember set of movement is indescribable.

evaluation
when finishing the piece we first added an ending onto it then when we got to the venue we had to run through it a few times because we didn't have as much space as we thought we did. the rehearsal process when we got the venue went well its very tiring and long however was all worth it, when we first arrived at the place I was a bit worried at first because the space was much smaller than I imagined it to be there was also two trees that I was aware of , a massive step in the middle of the stage and steps running along the back of the area so we then had to make adaptions in where were going to stand when were off stage and how we should stand which was then changed to kneeling, I think the first initial problem was just spacing everyone so it looked good we all did have enough space to do whatever we needed to do. I think the steps the stairs and weather was alight safety hazard as there was a lot of running about on stage and the steps could have been miss judged however we all just had to be very careful we remember our spatial awareness. I think the piece was very effective the music costume and everything really added to the dance and I could see the audience was very engaged throughout. iv learnt the intensity and strength that is needed to become professional and successful in the industry and how sometimes you just have to get on with something and to always listen to instructions given even if they are not directed exactly towards you.working with a dance company like Avant Garde has showed me how working as team and everyone putting in 100% effort will always give you the most successful and effective performance.
